There is a lot written about 'paving cowpaths' or not 'paving the cowpaths' amongst software designers or workflow designers. To 'pave the cowpath' is a term used in design workflows that looks at what users actually do in an existing workflow and automate that process. It's paving a commonly trod path - taking something that's done a slow way, and making a faster cleaner way of doing the same thing. There are those who argue the do or don’t of this but in my opinion they either take the analogy too literally or imply you have to always have to stay on the same side of the fence.
